1970: A truck trailer loaded with stuffed animals bound for the New Mexico State Fair went up in smoke when the axle bearing overheated and caught the trailer afire. The blaze occurred on U.S. 66 about 11 miles east of Tucumcari. The trailer’s owners from Illinois tried to salvage the remaining toys at the scene.
• Tucumcari postmaster Julius Fitzner said the post office would move into its new building at 222 S. First St. over the weekend. Fitzner said the post office and its mail carriers would conduct “business as usual” during the transition, including new keys issued for those who use lock boxes.
• The newspaper advertised lot sales for a weekend pre-opening event of the Big Mesa Addition at Conchas Lake. Brown Realty of Albuquerque, which was selling the lots, offered prizes for those who attended the event and registered.
