COVID-19 case likely to delay school start at Logan

The scheduled start of classes Monday at Logan Municipal Schools likely will be delayed after a staff member tested positive this week for COVID-19 and two other staff members are showing symptoms of the disease.

A social-media message and text sent about noon Thursday from the school district expressed regrets for the delay and probable postponement of classes scheduled to begin Monday.

The district was planning to hold in-person classes for prekindergarten to second-grade students, with the rest of the student body taking online classes until after Labor Day.

The post stated the entire school building would be off-limits effective 9 p.m. Thursday, and staff members who were exposed have been asked to self-quarantine for 14 days.

Those who show symptoms of coronavirus were urged to immediately schedule a test with their healthcare provider or the Quay County Public Health Office in Tucumcari.

The Logan school board would hold a special meeting Sunday evening to consider delaying the start of school for both in-person and online classes until Sept. 8.

Textbook, login and device distribution has been tentatively postponed to Sept. 3.

The New Mexico Department of Health on Wednesday reported three confirmed coronavirus cases in the Logan ZIP code.

Ute Lake State Park in Logan also closed for an indefinite period Wednesday after several employees showed COVID-19 symptoms the previous day. The state will keep the park closed until coronavirus tests clear those workers.
