1970: Ben Romero is setting up softball teams for men of all ages. The first game will be tonight and feature Dennis Dominguez’s team versus Les Darnelli’s team. Both teams haven’t chosen a nickname yet. Romero said he has extended invitations to Logan and San Jon to organize their own teams and play against the Tucumcari squads.
• Vickie Helker of Grady was named All-Around Cowgirl at the 23rd annual New Mexico High School Championship Rodeo in Santa Rosa. Helker, 16, finished first in the barrel racing and pole bending, setting a record in each event. She also finished fourth in breakaway roping.
• The Odeon Theatre in Tucumcari was screening the 1962 film from Walt Disney Productions, “In Search of the Castaways.” The movie, based on Jules Verne’s classic adventure novel, starred Hayley Mills and Maurice Chevalier.
