1970: Raphael Martinez defeated A.D. Stephenson and incumbent Bud Clayton in the election for Tucumcari municipal judge. Martinez earned 203 votes, or 44%, Stephenson 145 votes (32%) and Clayton 105 votes (23%) in light turnout. Tucumcari city commissioners Mayor Kenneth Schlientz, Tommy Thomas and Grady Huffman were unopposed for re-election.
• Kathy McCoy, with her Steak Diane recipe, and Sharon Block, with her Simplified Stew offering, won the senior and junior divisions in the Beef Recipe Fair at Tucumcari High School. They earned an expense-paid trip to the state contest during the annual Cattlegrowers Convention in Santa Fe.
• Wayne Liles and Victor Blair were the senior division winners and Audrey Bone and Margie Torres were the junior division winners during the San Jon Spelling Bee.
• The Odeon Theatre in Tucumcari was screening “Johnny Cash! The Man, His World, His Music.” In addition to Cash, the documentary featured June Carter, Bob Dylan, Mother Maybelle Carter, The Carter Family, Carl Perkins and Cash’s band, The Tennessee Three.
