Serving the High Plains
The Grady/San Jon boys basketball team ended its regular season on a high note Thursday with an 83-80 overtime victory over district rival Logan.
Isaiah Mitchell led the Bronchos with 24 points, while Chisum Rush added 21.
“We faced a lot of adversity last night from Chisum fracturing his thumb to Chad (Becerra) fouling out in the third, and we were resilient through it all,” Bronchos coach Jonathan Langan said.
Grady/San Jon entered the fourth quarter trailing 54-46 but stormed back to tie it in regulation. Mitchell and Dustin Bryant (17 points) each scored four points in overtime.
Dante Sanchez led Logan with 19 points, while Garrett Bollinger added 18.
Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said free throws were the difference in the game. His Longhorns made 7-of-18, while the Bronchos went 36-of-44 from the line.
“Quite a difference in the number attempted,” Griffiths said. “But they for sure made a bunch of them.”
Langan said Rush would be questionable for this week’s district tournament games.
For the district tournament, fourth-seeded Logan was hosting fifth-seed Clovis Christian at 8 p.m. Monday.
The winner of that game would play at third-seed Grady at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The winner of that matchup would play at second-seeded Fort Sumner at 6 p.m. Thursday. The district-tournament championship game will be at top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Melrose at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Melrose 67, Grady/San Jon 42
No. 1-ranked Melrose continued to rampage its way through the district schedule with a 67-42 win Feb. 18 over visiting Grady/San Jon.
Rush led the Bronchos with 17 points.
“We didn’t seem like we really wanted to win as bad as we needed to win,” Langan said. “We didn’t take care of the ball and rebound well at all. I think that’s the reason the score turned out the way it did.”
Melrose improved to 22-1 overall and 6-0 in District 6.
