1970: Three people were hospitalized after two separate accidents in Quay County. Brodie Webb, 15, and Steve Holcomb, both of McAlister, were taken to Trigg Memorial Hospital in Tucumcari after a one-vehicle accident two miles north of McAlister. The driver said he swerved to miss an animal that darted across the highway. He overcorrected, lost control and rolled the vehicle. A half-mile west of Tucumcari on U.S. 66, an Oklahoma City man suffered a stroke and lost control of his car. His vehicle hit a bridge railing and overturned. He was being cared for in the cardiac unit of the hospital.
• A total of 119 children were examined at the yearly district orthopedic clinic held by the Health and Social Services Department’s Crippled Children’s Service at Presbyterian Fellowship Hall in Tucumcari. The clinic served children in the counties of Quay, Curry, De Baca, Guadalupe, Roosevelt and Harding counties.
• Wayne L. Mayo reeled in a 10-pound, 31-inch-long walleyed pike from near the south deck of Conchas Lake. He said he used a June bug spinner and worms as bait.
