Lady Longhorns defeat Grady/San Jon 57-12

LOGAN - The Grady/San Jon girls basketball team knew it might have a tough night Thursday against the No. 1-ranked team in Class 1A.

It was made tougher by an illness to Lady Bronchos coach Alicia Rush, who couldn't yell instructions to her players on the floor during a 57-12 loss.

"We're better than what we did tonight, but I'm sick and they can't hear me," a hoarse Rush said in a near-whisper after the game. "If I can't direct traffic, they're not (as good)."

Teryn Foote led the Lady Bronchos with seven points. Grady/San Jon fell to 6-11 overall and 0-4 in Class 1A's District 6.

The Lady Longhorns took a double-digit lead barely halfway through the first quarter and led by 30 at intermission. The running-clock mercy rule with a 35-point deficit went into effect in the third quarter.

Jordan Hines led Logan with 12 points, while Karli Webb added 11 and Kyndall Ragland 10 while barely playing half the game.

Logan coach Glynna Strand said she was satisfied with her team's play.

"I thought we played defense well," she said. "We had a goal to hold them to 25 (points) and under, and we definitely surpassed that."

Strand said her team didn't do anything unusual against Foote, who is the Lady Bronchos' top scorer this season.

"I told the girls she's the one we had to stop, but we didn't even face-guard her," she said. "We didn't do any certain strategy. We're pretty good defensively; I didn't feel the need to do anything special with her."

Logan 60, Fort Sumner 48

The Lady Longhorns notched an important district victory Saturday with a 60-48 decision over Fort Sumner.

Logan maintained its first-place standing in District 6 with a 4-0 mark and improved to 18-3 overall. Fort Sumner, ranked third in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com last week, fell to 16-6, 3-2.

Kassi Foote led the Lady Longhorns with 17 points, but Strand singled out Kesleah Shields for praise for her 10 points and gritty play.

"Kesleah was a beast," Strand said. "They played dirty and shoved us around, and Kesleah fought hard. She took two charges at pivotal moments. They kept fouling her, thinking she couldn't make free throws, and she made 5-for-6."

Strand said Saturday's game brought to mind a recent Penasco girls basketball game at Escalante, where a Penasco player was hospitalized with a traumatic brain injury, a concussion and broken bones in her face after a collision.

"That is exactly what it was like last night," she said. "I feared for my girls' safety."
