Tucumcari boys lose to Bosque

The Tucumcari boys basketball team fell to yet another highly touted team during a 66-39 loss Saturday at Bosque.

The Bobcats (12-2), ranked No. 2 in Class 3A by both the coaches’ poll and MaxPreps.com last week, blitzed the Rattlers by taking a 23-10 lead in the first quarter, 43-18 at intermission and 61-22 at the end of the third quarter.

“They really shot the ball well against us,” Tucumcari coach John Span said of his opponent. “We didn’t match up well with their speed. They were just quicker than we were. That didn’t help any.”

The Rattlers committed 17 turnovers against Bosque — not a good number but better than the average of almost 30 in two previous games.

“That’s a little better, but we’re still not taking care of the ball,” Span said.

Jesus Ramos led Tucumcari with 17 points, while Andrew Henderson-Clark added 10.

The Rattlers (6-11) have lost three in a row — all to teams ranked in the top three of their respective classes.

Tucumcari has the week off before starting district play at New Mexico Military Institute on Feb. 4.

Santa Rose 79, Tucumcari 43

Tucumcari committed 27 turnovers in a 79-43 loss Jan. 21 at state-ranked Santa Rosa.

Henderson-Clark scored 16 points to lead the Rattlers, and Ramos added 13. Tucumcari scored only 19 points in the first half as the Lions seized control.

Santa Rosa, ranked third in Class 2A by MaxPreps.com, won its sixth straight game and improved to 13-5.
