Logan boys take fourth at EPAC

The Logan boys basketball team finished fourth in the Plateau EPAC Tournament with a 66-61 loss Saturday to Elida at Eastern New Mexico University's Greyhound Arena in Portales.

Longhorns coach Kyle Griffiths said his team was outscored 18-6 in the third quarter, which proved to be a turning point in the game. Logan also missed 15 free throws.

Griffiths said his players "have to take advantage of easy opportunities and can't have quarters where we get beat so bad."

Wyatt Wright led Logan with 14 points, while Dante Sanchez and Jordan Evans each added 13.

Logan ended the weekend with a 9-6 record. Elida, third in the latest Class 1A rankings by MaxPreps.com, improved to 12-2.

Melrose, the defending state champion in Class 1A, won the tournament with a 66-37 win over Tatum in the tournament's title game.

Tatum 62, Logan 48

Logan fell behind 30-18 by halftime and never recovered during a 62-48 loss Friday in the semifinals of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Greyhound Arena.

Sanchez scored 22 points to lead the Longhorns. No other Logan player broke double figures

"We struggled to make layups and free throws," Griffiths said.

Tatum, ranked sixth in Class 1A in the latest Class 1A ratings by MaxPreps.com, improved to 9-4.

Logan 68, Fort Sumner 54

The Longhorns used a 21-13 fourth quarter to ice a 68-54 victory Wednesday against district rival Fort Sumner during the first round of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Melrose.

Sanchez scored 25 points to lead Logan, and Wright added 22.

"We had a bunch of guys step up in a big game," Griffiths said, adding it was "probably one of our best overall games as a team."

The Foxes, ranked 11th in Class 1A in the latest MaxPreps.com ratings, fell to 5-7.

Fort Sumner 66, Grady/San Jon 58

The Bronchos finished eighth in the Plateau EPAC Tournament with a 66-58 loss Saturday to Fort Sumner at Greyhound Arena.

"We played tough and had a lead in the first half," Grady/San Jon coach Jonathan Langan said. "We had guys in foul trouble, and that hurt us in the second half."

Isaiah Mitchell led the Bronchos with 19 points. Dustin Bryant added 13, and Chad Becerra and Chisum Rush each scored 11.

Grady/San Jon finished with weekend with a 6-6 record; Fort Sumner improved to 7-7.

Grady/San Jon 70, Floyd 50

Grady/San Jon bounced back Thursday in the consolation round with a 70-50 win over Floyd in the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Melrose.

Bryant led a balanced Bronchos attack with 22 points. Rush added 19, Mitchell 12 and Becerra 10.

"We played better and got out in transition well," Langan said. "Floyd went on a few runs, but we dominated on the boards on both ends, and that helped us pull away."

Floyd fell to 1-9.

Melrose 67, Grady/San Jon 50

Grady/San Jon fell to Class 1A defending champion and No. 1-ranked Melrose 67-50 Wednesday in the first round of the first round of the Plateau EPAC Tournament at Melrose.

Rush scored 19 points, and Bryant added 10.

"In order to beat the best, you have to play your best," Langan said. "We did not play our best basketball last night."

Melrose improved to 9-1.
