Serving the High Plains
The Quay County Clerk’s Office is reminding voters and prospective candidates to make sure their registrations are in order before the primary election for Democratic and Republican parties June 2.
The New Mexico Secretary of State will issue a proclamation Jan. 27 calling for the primary election. At that time, a candidate’s registration is frozen, and no additional changes can be made. Anyone interested in becoming an electoral candidate should make sure his or her registration is in order before that date.
A person who is not registered to vote and voters who need to update their registrations are urged to act now ensure their eligibility for this year’s primary and general elections. Those who have moved and not changed their registration to their current address should do so.
The deadline is May 5 for voter registration online or by mail. Voters also may update their registrations in person at the county clerk’s office from May 5 to May 30 during regular business hours.
Anyone who will be 18 years old before the general election Nov. 3 is eligible to register and vote in the June 2 primary.
New Mexico requires prospective voters to be registered with a major political party to vote in the primary. Those who choose no party or a minor party will not be able to participate in the primary unless they make that change official with the county clerk.
Residents can update and register to vote online at https://portal.sos.state.nm.us/. Forms also are available at the Quay County Clerk’s Office, Human Services Department, Motor Vehicle Departments and all city and village Offices. Please call 575-461-0510 for more information.
