Serving the High Plains
The Tucumcari boys basketball team dropped its season opener during a 75-57 decision Nov. 26 at Laguna Acoma.
Foul trouble hampered the Rattlers’ chances during the game. Senior guard TJ Lampkin fouled out in the first half, and the team’s leading scorer last season, guard-forward Jesus Ramos, fouled out in the third quarter.
Also, senior forward Robbie Hartmann was kept out of the game. He is recovering from an ankle injury suffered during football season but might be able to play this week.
“With certain kids not on the floor, we’re a different team,” Tucumcari coach John Span said.
Laguna Acoma surged to a 41-28 lead at halftime and led 59-41 at the end of the third period.
Curtis Gonzales, a freshman, led the Rattlers with 16 points. Ramos had nine.
Span said the host Hawks were a stout challenge, especially when they made 10 3-point shots to Tucumcari’s five.
“They shot the ball, and they were quicker than we were,” he said. “They played better as a team than we do. They’re a good team.”
Logan 74, Clayton 33
Dante Sanchez scored 29 points to lead the host Longhorns in a demolition of Clayton 74-33 in both teams’ season-openers Nov. 26.
Wyatt Wright added 15 points and Jason Knight 10 for Logan.
The Longhorns led 34-19 at halftime and ballooned their advantage to more than 20 by early the third quarter. Logan also scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth period.
“The guys came out with a lot of energy in the game,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “I was proud of how hard they worked. Still have a lot we need to work on early in the season, but overall I’m excited about the year.”
