1969: U.S. Sen. Joseph Montoya sent the newspaper a telegram, urging officials from the state, Tucumcari, San Jon and Bureau of Public Roads to find a solution on a years-long impasse on building Interstate 40 between Tucumcari and the Texas state line. Alternate I-40 alignments that would have bypassed San Jon by several miles were deemed “unacceptable to the village,” Montoya stated. The senator urged the Federal Highways Administration to hold consultations and review the request by the village and state “to find a solution instead of additional postponement.” Hearings on the matter were scheduled for Tucumcari on Nov. 21.
