Rodeo draws 72 from around state

A total of 72 participants from all over New Mexico competed for saddles, buckles and prizes during the Quay County 4-H Rodeo on Friday and Saturday at the Quay County Fairgrounds rodeo arena in Tucumcari.

4-H youth competed in goat tying, pole bending, barrel racing, team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and other events.

A total of 32 buckles and three saddles were awarded to top entries in the novice, junior and senior categories. Among the Quay County winners were Rylan Montoya in the novice flag race, Ace Whitson in junior pole pending and Colten Leonard as senior team roping header.

"We would like to thank the numerous local sponsors for the great support that 4-H receives for the rodeo and the great volunteers that spend many hours preparing," said Jason Lamb, agriculture agent for the Quay County Extension Office.

Saddle donors and Gold Star contributors were T-4 Cattle Company, Screwbean Ranch, Southwest Quay Soil and Water, Discovery Inn, R&R Line Services, Farm Credit of New Mexico, FNB New Mexico, Citizens Bank, Jack Huntley and Sam Dunlap.

Elks Lodge 1172 in Tucumcari donated buckles for the runner-up all-around winners.
