Voters in the San Jon school district during the Nov. 5 general election will vote on a proposed $800,000 general-obligation bond package for repairs to the district’s school buildings and other facilities.
The San Jon school board unanimously passed a resolution during its meeting June 17 that would put the bond question on the November ballot.
District Superintendent Janet Gladu said in a phone interview last week that members of the state’s Public School Capital Outlay Council recently toured the school grounds and graded facilities on what repairs are needed most.
The council’s report won’t be available until July, but Gladu said she anticipates the district’s boiler, track, climate-control system and fire alarms probably will be among the highest priority for repairs. She said those had scored poorly in the past, mostly due to their age.
Gladu said she anticipates the district would issue two sets of bonds at $400,000 each because their interest rates likely would be more favorable for the district.
She said the district will make its final payments on a previous bond issue this year.
If passed, the new bonds would not lead to any increases in property taxes, she said.
Gladu expressed confidence the November bond question would be approved, noting the school district’s previous bond vote had passed easily.
