Logan girls take title

ALBUQUERQUE - The Logan girls track team continued its season-long dominance, easily winning the Class 1A team title Saturday during the NMAA Track and Field Championships at the UNM Track-Soccer Complex.

The Lady Longhorns scored 89 points over the two-day event, almost double over runner-up Fort Sumner's 48 points. Two of its winning relay teams were among those that broke 20 state records over the weekend, despite cold and rainy weather Friday and two lightning delays Saturday.

The Logan boys finished second in the Class 1A team standings with 48 1/2 points, runner-up only to Fort Sumner's dominating 102 points. Dyson Day and Jantzen Paris each won state titles and set state records in the process.

Logan coach Robert Young beamed after both his teams took home trophies over the weekend.

"I can't ask for much better," he said Saturday. "The kids ran hard, and they battled. We had a lot of personal records and get a few state records. We had some good senior leadership today. They sure make my job easy. I'm pretty blessed."

The Lady Longhorns squad should be strong next year, as it will lose only three seniors. But those seniors proved valuable, with Harlie Roach, Cassidy Cordova and Destiney Cleveland scoring points in events.

"The way they blossomed was awesome," Young said. "I've had a lot of these kids since the eighth, ninth grade, and it was a good run."

Another key senior loss for the Logan boys was Dalhart, Texas, transfer Dyson Day, a senior who also scored points and broke a state record in the 100-meter dash.

"We're pretty young, so we'll have a lot of guys back," Young said. "But we're going to miss Dyson. I had him only one year, but he's fast, a good jumper and really helps with the relays."

Logan girls who figured in the team scores were:

• Sierra Horne in the long jump (first, 15 feet, 8 inches);

• Roach in the discus (first, 96-4) and shot put (sixth, 29-10 3/4);

• Cordova in the 100-meter dash (fourth, 0:13.45), 200-meter dash (fourth, 0:28.03) and long jump (second, 15-7);

• Jodi Vance in the 800-meter run (second, 2:31.11) and pole vault (second, 7-6);

• Cleveland in the 100-meter dash (fifth, 0:13.72);

• Karlee Cantrell in the 400-meter dash (fifth, 1:05.79);

• Kambry Burns in the 200-meter dash (fifth, 0:28.67);

• Joanie Vance in the 800-meter run (fourth, 2:34.51);

• Jordan Hines in the high jump (fifth, 5-0);

• 800-meter relay team of Cantrell, Burns, Cordova and Cleveland (first, 1:50.92, state record);

• 1,600-meter sprint medley of Horne, Hines, Kassi Foote and Jodi Vance (first, 4:33.43, state record);

• 1,600-meter relay team of Burns, Foote, Cantrell and Jodi Vance (second, 4:32.69);

The Logan boys prevailed in a somewhat tight race for second place despite a dropped baton in a 400-meter relay race and pole vaulter Steven Coronado, ranked atop the field, failing to place amid Friday's frigid and wet weather.

"With the boys, we overcame a rough start yesterday, but we picked ourselves up and did well at the end," Young said.

Logan boys who figured in the team scores were:

• Day in the 100-meter dash (first, 0:11.31, state record) and long jump (third, 19-9);

• Paris in the 200-meter dash (first, 0:23.28, state record) and 400-meter dash (first, 0:50.62, state record);

• Jordan Evans in the triple jump (fourth, 38-11 1/2) and long jump (fourth, 19-8);

• 800-meter relay team of Michael Sena, Paris, Julian Chavez and Coronado (first, 1:36.14);

• 1,600-meter sprint medley team of Nick Brown, Chavez, Sena and Zack Byrd (fourth, 4:00.69);

• 1,600-meter relay team of Dante Sanchez, Evans, Chavez and Paris (first, 3:37.85);

The San Jon boys scored 18 points to finish ninth - all from freshman Dustin Bryant's victory in the long jump, runner-up in the high jump (5-8), third place in the triple jump (40-7 1/2) and fifth place in the 300-meter hurdles (0:43.10).

House scored five points with Dylan Reed's second-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:00.46), finishing only behind Jude Segura state-record effort of 2:00.46 for Fort Sumner.
