Logan baseball closes with wins

The Logan baseball closed the regular season last week with three straight wins, against Melrose and Elida.

On May 6, Logan trailed the bottom of the seventh inning 12-10 but rallied for three runs to win the game, 13-12. The Buffaloes issuing 14 walks during the game aided the Longhorns’ cause. Logan also ran wild on the basepaths with 28 steals. Grant Bollinger, Skyler DeLuca and Park Strong each had RBI for Logan.

Logan ended the year with an 8-12 record overall and 6-12 in Class 1A, District 2, finishing fifth.

Melrose ended the week at 5-14 overall, 5-13 in district.

Logan 14-8, Elida 7-4

Logan ended its regular season with a doubleheader sweep Thursday at Elida.

In the first game, Logan led just 8-7 after five innings but scored six unanswered runs to secure the 14-7 victory.

Kyle Knight led the Longhorns by going 3-for-5 with four RBI. DeLuca and Strong combined forces on the mound for the win.

In the nightcap, a five-run sixth inning gave Logan a come-from-behind 8-4 victory.

Kyle Knight and Jason Knight each drove in two runs for the Longhorns (8-12).

Dante Sanchez earned the victory with eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. DeLuca pitched the final one-third of an inning for the save.

Elida fell to 9-9 overall.

Gateway Christian 34, Grady/San Jon 3

The Bronchos proved to be no match against the No. 1-ranked and still unbeaten district foe Gateway Christian during a 34-3 loss May 6 at Grady.

The Warriors (18-0) scored 12 runs in the second inning and 17 in the third to take control. Gateway Christian also earned the No. 1 seed in the state tournament that begins this week.

Gateway Christian starting pitcher Hayden Wigley allowed four hits, walked three and struck out nine in five innings. He also drove in four runs.

The Bronchos finished the season at 2-16 both in district and overall play.
