Area FFA programs compete at Las Cruces contest

Several area FFA programs recently competed at the FFA Career Development Events state contest in Las Cruces, with competitors from Tucumcari and Logan advancing to national competition this week.

Tucumcari FFA’s homesite team of Tianna Peterson, Brittany Benton, Reyes Garcia and Kolbyn Hutchins finished fifth in state, with Peterson finishing seventh individually. They qualified for the national competition in Oklahoma City, slated to begin Thursday.

Tucumcari’s agronomy team finished seventh at state and its forestry team ninth.

For Logan, the land and horse-evaluation teams finished first and advanced to national competition. The land team of Amber Rivera, Robert Stringfellow, Jason Knight and Kenzi McWright goes to Oklahoma City for nationals this week; the horse team of Joanie Vance, Skyler Deluca, Grady Johnston and Jodi Vance advanced to the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.

Top high individuals for the Logan chapter at state competition were Stringfellow, first in land; Joanie Vance, first in horse; Rivera, second in horticulture produce; Mackenzie Lightfoot, second in poultry; and McWright, fourth in land.

Logan’s poultry evaluation team finished second, homesite team fourth, and the meats team and the livestock team each finished fifth. Logan competed in 16 contests overall and finished in the top 10 in 13.

For San Jon, its FFA poultry team of Tobe Slater, Andrew Erwin, Bailey Montoya and Dustin Bryant finished third. Slater also was the high-point individual and qualified for the National FFA Convention.

San Jon’s second poultry team of Morgan Becerra, Kaeden Stoner and Robyn Evans finished fifth. The school’s dairy cattle evaluation team of Karlee Elliott, Bailey McEwen, Kirksey Smith and Kaeden Stoner finished eighth.
