Elena Gutierrez, a freshman at Tucumcari High School, advanced to national finals from the recent Family, Career and Community Leaders of America state competition in Albuquerque.
Elena competed in the Sports Nutrition category during the FCCLA event and earned first place. She created a seven-day nutritional profile for a fictitious athlete's needs. She used some of her experiences as a volleyball, basketball and track athlete to help create the profile.
Elena earned a silver-medal score of 83 during the competition, which was below gold-medal level of 90 and above. However, her score was higher than her other competitors.
She is the daughter of Theresa Encinias and Richard Martinez.
The FCCLA finals will be June 30-July 4 in Anaheim, California.
