1969: The Canal Drive-In Theatre in Tucumcari advertised its grand opening with a double-feature of two Disney films: “Charlie the Lonesome Cougar” and “The Shaggy Dog.” The theater was two miles west of town on Route 66. Admission for adults was $1; children age 11 and younger were admitted free. It touted itself as the “nicest drive-in in New Mexico.”
• A series of photos were published of the Tucumcari High School boys track team: Verl McGuire in the discus throw, Mike Reid in the javelin throw, Louis Sena in the medley relay, Joe Jimenez in the one-mile run, Vernon Hines in the 440-yard dash and Anthony Sena, who was one of the team’s state qualifiers last season, in the high jump.
