Tucumcari hosts relay

Tucumcari played the host of the Rattler Relays track and field event, but it was Logan that apparently felt most at home.

Both the Logan boys and girls squads took home titles during the 12-team event Saturday, beating out several schools with enrollments much larger.

"I thought both teams did a great job today, especially with having only a few days of practice," Logan coach Robert Young said. "We had several individuals and relays each state-qualifying marks. I'm excited to see how much every athlete improves throughout the season."

In the boys competition, Logan edged runner-up Santa Rosa for the team title, 69 to 68. Tucumcari was close behind with 67 points. Rounding out the rest of the field were Clayton with 50 1/3 points, Texico 47, Robertson 33, Pecos 30 1/3, Cimarron 22, Mora 20 1/3, Clovis Christian 20, Dora 1 and San Jon 1.

Because it was a season-opening event, Tucumcari coach Wayne Ferguson tempered any disappointment he might have had.

"It's early," Ferguson said. "We treat it as a meet where we see what everybody has. The boys qualified in one relay and just missed in a couple of other ones. That will round into shape once we get everyone into condition."

Winners for Tucumcari were Gerardo Villa-Vargas in the 200-meter dash (23.66 seconds), Seth Martinez in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.14) and 300-meter hurdles (40.46), plus the 800-meter relay (1:34.90) and 1,600-meter relay (3:37.72).

Winners for Logan were Dyson Day in the long jump (21 feet), Jordan Evans in the triple jump (38-2), Nick Brown in the 100-meter dash (11.47) and the 400-meter relay (45.52). Logan also piled up points with strong finishes in several relays.

For the girls, Logan topped the field with 65 points, while Robertson was runner-up with 63. Rounding out the rest of the field were Clayton with 59 points, Cimarron 52, Tucumcari 46, Clovis Christian 43, Pecos 19, Dora 17, Texico 14, Mora 7, San Jon 7 and Santa Rosa 5.

Individual winners for Tucumcari were Aaliyah Brown in the 200-meter dash (28.93) and Secilee Skinner in the shot put (34-4).

"Aaliyah Brown did really well in the 100 and 200 for the first week of practice," Ferguson said. "Erin Encinias looked good in the 800 (third) and the mile (second)."

Winners for Logan were Harlie Roach in the discus (97-4?), Cassidy Cordova in the long jump (15-0), Kambry Burns in the high jump (4-10), plus the 400-meter relay (54.53), 800-meter relay (1:57.21) and 1,600-meter relay (4:40.02).

San Jon boasted an individual winner when Teryn Foote finished first in the 400-meter dash in 1:08.52.
