Dexter used a strong second half to turn a close game into an easy 75-50 district victory Feb. 19 over the visiting Rattlers.
Tucumcari led 34-33 at halftime, but the Demons outscored them 42-16 the rest of the way and stayed in strong contention for the Class 1A, District 4 regular-season title by improving to a 4-1 record and 14-11 overall.
“They kept scoring, and we didn’t,” Tucumcari coach John Span said in summing up the critical second half.
Span said 6-foot-7 Bryan Cano, who scored 10 of his 14 points, and David Miramontes, who scored 15 of his 22 points, did much of the damage for Dexter in the second half.
Jesus Ramos led Tucumcari with 16 points, and Jaxon Arguello added 11.
Tucumcari fell to 3-19 overall and 1-4 in district play.
Game rescheduled
Tucumcari’s scheduled district game at home Saturday against Tularosa was delayed to Monday afternoon because of icy roads in the Tularosa area. A final score wasn’t available before deadline.
Dexter captured the top seed in this week’s district tournament with a 5-1 record. Tularosa was 14-9, 2-3 before Monday.
