The Fort Sumner boys basketball team jumped out to a 25-4 lead in the first quarter en route to a dominating 78-40 victory Saturday over Logan in a tiebreaking game that decided the regular-season district championship.
Because both teams had 7-1 records in Class 1A, District 6, they were forced to play the tie-breaker in a neutral gym — Tucumcari.
“We couldn’t get the basketball in the basket, and they didn’t miss much,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said of his team’s first period. “They came out with more energy and fire than we did.”
The Foxes improved to 20-7 overall. Logan fell to 20-6.
Dyson Day led the Longhorns with 10 points.
Clovis Christian was scheduled to begin the district tournament this week by going to Grady for a game at 6:30 p.m. Monday. No score of that game was available before deadline. The winner of that game would travel to Melrose for a game at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The winner of that matchup would go to No. 2-seed Logan for a game at 6 p.m. Thursday. The winner would play at Fort Sumner for the district title at 6 p.m. Saturday.
