The Logan boys basketball team notched a key district victory by edging host Melrose 61-59 on Thursday.
The Longhorns led 53-46 at the end of the third quarter and hung on the rest of the way. They improved to 2-0 in district play.
Dyson Day led Logan with 25 points, while Kyle Knight added 11 and Dante Sanchez 10.
“It was a full team effort,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “We had some players step up in big moments. Defensively, we did a good job making it tough on them to score.”
Melrose, ranked No. 3 in Class 1A by MaxPreps.com, fell to 12-5 overall and 0-2 in the district.
Logan was ranked No. 5 in Class 1A before the game.
Logan 88, Clayton 49
Logan jumped to a 29-5 lead in the first quarter and cruised the rest of the way Saturday during an 88-49 victory over visiting Clayton.
Day scored 21 points for the Longhorns, who improved to 15-4 overall and are ranked fifth in Class 1A. Sanchez added 17, Knight 15 and Charles Earle 12 for Logan.
Clayton fell to 8-10 overall.
Grady/San Jon/House 66, Clovis Christian 50
Grady/San Jon/House outscored Clovis Christian 19-2 in the second quarter to secure a 66-50 district victory Thursday.
Chisum Rush scored 27 points to led the Bronchos.
“We did a really good job forcing bad shots and rebounding,” Bronchos coach Jonathan Langan said. “We finally started to rotate and communicate in our zone (defense), and it forced a lot of errors on their end.”
Clovis Christian fell to 3-10 and 0-3 in district play.
Fort Sumner 80, Grady 45
The Foxes jumped out to a 55-23 halftime lead en route to an 80-45 district victory Saturday over the visiting Bronchos.
Rush scored 19 points to lead the Bronchos, who fell to 5-11 and 1-1 in district play.
Fort Sumner, ranked No. 2 in Class 1A, improved to 15-5 overall and 3-0 in the district.
