The Logan boys basketball team fended off a furious Clayton comeback bid to win its season opener Friday on the road, 67-63.
Chase Earle scored 19 points for the Longhorns, including a bucket with four seconds left to seal the game after an offensive rebound and subsequent assist from Kyle Knight, who had 15 points along with Dyson Day.
“It was a lot closer than it needed to be,” Logan coach Kyle Griffiths said. “We were up by 16, 17 points with four minutes left, and Clayton started making 3-pointers.”
Knight also made a key basket late in the game to keep the Yellowjackets at bay.
Elida 63, Grady 53
Elida seized a double-digit lead at halftime against Grady and won 63-53 during both teams’ season-opening game Saturday at Grady.
The Tigers outscored the Bronchos 20-11 in the second period to take a 39-28 lead at intermission.
“We played tough but got outhustled on some plays,” Bronchos coach Jonathan Langan said. “If we had boxed out more and rebounded better, we would have made a better game of it.”
Langan said Elida also made more free throws down the stretch.
The Bronchos are beginning their first season of a cooperative with the San Jon and House school districts. Langan said that also proved to be a factor against Elida because his players still are adjusting to each other.
“Our team chemistry was a little shaky,” he said.
