1968: The Quay County Commission soon will meet with the state tax commission in an effort to reduce all property valuations by 10 percent. The tax commission on Nov. 9 raised the assessment rate to 33 1/3 percent in an effort to establish a statewide, uniform assessment ratio of actual value. The state's action came under orders of the New Mexico Supreme Court to establish a uniform ratio. The action affected about half of the state's counties, including Quay, with an assessment rate of less than 33 1/3 percent. Quay County had a rate of 25 percent of the recent reappraisal. This means assessors in about half of the state's counties will have to refigure all their assessments, regardless of whether their county commissions can reduce property valuations.
