Logan defeats Melrose

Logan on Saturday defeated No. 1-ranked Melrose on the road 25-22, 24-26, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12 in an epic clash of regional volleyball powers that undoubtedly will shake up the state rankings.

The Lady Longhorns, ranked fourth in Class 1A in MaxPreps.com before Saturday, defeated the Lady Buffaloes for a second time this season and took control of the district standings with a 7-0 record, with one district match remaining against struggling Clovis Christian.

Logan, which also defeated Melrose on Sept. 28, improved to 16-3 overall and won its 10th in a row.

In Saturday’s match, only three points separated the two clubs.

“It was the most exciting match I’ve been involved with in a long time, maybe the most exciting match ever,” Logan coach Robert Young said. “All of the games could have gone either way.”

Melrose, ranked at the top of the Class 1A standings all season, fell to 14-2 overall, 3-2 in district. No. 2 Quernado (17-0) remains the only undefeated team left in Class 1A.

Young credited his backcourt players Cassidy Cordova and Emily LeBlanc for stabilizing his team’s attack.

“I thought our back row stood up,” he said. “They really got the ball to our setters. Our whole defense was good overall.”

Young also credited the serving of Harlie Roach and Kristi Earle during the match.

Logan has the week off before playing a district game at Clovis Christian on Nov. 1.

Logan 3, Fort Sumner 0

Logan crushed visiting Fort Sumner 25-8, 25-9, 25-9 during a district matchup Thursday.

The Vixens fell to 6-11 overall, 1-4 in district.

Grady/San Jon 3, Clovis Christian 0

Grady/San Jon, ranked eighth in Class 1A, struggled early but still defeated Clovis Christian in straight sets Thursday.

The Lady Bronchos prevailed 27-25, 25-6, 25-16 during the district matchup. They improved to 11-7 overall, 3-3 in district.

Yara Sotelo led Grady/San Jon with 12 kills and 10 digs. Teammate Leah Starbuck also totaled 12 kills and 19 assists. Timia Northcutt made 13 digs.

The Eagles fell to 2-10, 0-5.
