San Jon/Grady emerged triumphant in its first district matchup by defeating Roy/Mosquero 55-24 in a six-man football game Friday at San Jon.
Ethan Short and Chad Becerra each scored two touchdowns for the Coyotes (3-1). But the key play was by Chisum Rush, who returned an interception for a touchdown to forge a 26-12 Coyotes lead late in the second quarter after Roy/Mosquero (0-4) threatened.
San Jon/Grady coach Adrian Jones said his team concentrated on defense in practice during the week leading up to the game, and it paid off.
“We know we’re able to move the ball and score,” Jones said. “We knew going into the game (Roy/Mosquero) was young and liked running the ball up the middle. We practiced a lot on clogging up the inside. Our defense stepped it up in this game.”
The Coyotes next host Springer/Maxwell for a district game about 4 p.m. Friday, after a junior-varsity matchup.
Logan 56, Foothill 16
The Longhorns racked up more than 600 yards rushing during a 56-16 eight-man football victory Friday night over Foothill.
Kyle Knight led Logan (2-3) with 319 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries. Teammate Chase Hittson ran for 190 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries, and he added 17 tackles on defense.
“We ran the ball really well and a lot harder,” Logan coach Chase Disney said. “We put a lot more blocking schemes in. Our tackling made a difference, too. We played hard all four quarters.”
The Longhorns sealed the victory with three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter against the Falcons (3-2).
Logan hosts Melrose during its Homecoming game at 7 p.m. Friday.

Fort Sumner clobbered Mission Achievement & Success 56-0 in a game Saturday afternoon shortened by the mercy rule.
The Foxes (4-0), ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, has a cooperative agreement with House Municipal Schools and includes three players from that district on its roster.
The Foxes host Crownpoint at 1 p.m. Saturday.
