Chavez, Encinias finish in top 30

Josh Chavez and Erin Encinias were the top Tucumcari boys and girls runners respectively during the Ron Valdez Invitational cross-country meet Saturday in Pecos.

“The Pecos course is one of the toughest courses in the state; you run at over 6,000 feet (elevation),” coach Gary Hittson said Saturday. “Very proud of the team; they ran with a lot of heart today.”

Chavez finished 27th of 109 runners in the varsity boys race. His time over the 3-mile course was 19 minutes, 17 seconds.

Other Tucumcari runners included Manny Hernandez (52nd, 20:15), Charles Prieto (72nd, 21:50), Dwight Brown (97th, 25:26), Nathan Mardo (101st, 26:12), Britt Lusk (106th, 28:18) and Joe Garcia (109th, 31:09).

Team results weren’t available.

Encinias finished 29th of 84 runners in the girls race. Her time was 23:38.

Other Tucumcari girls runners were Aleaya Lucero (48th, 25:20), Ashley Shipley (63rd, 27:19), Ashanti Taylor (75th, 30:15) and Melanie Jones (81st, 39:23).

Robertson won the girls meet with 78 points, followed by Taos with 80 and Pecos with 81.

In the junior-varsity girls race, Aaliyah Brown was 16th in 31:52, Lenora Trujillo was 17th in 32:36 and Mariah Ruvalcaba-Vasquez was 18th in 32:36. A total of 30 runners participated in that race.

The Rattlers’ next meet is at the Hobbs Invitational at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 4, followed by the Mesalands Fun Run in Tucumcari at 8 a.m. Oct. 6.
