The Mesalands Community College rodeo men’s team won the team roping reserve championship title during its first competition of the season this past weekend at Tsaile, Arizona.
Both the men’s and women’s teams finished fourth in the average.
Mesalands team roper Michael Lucero of Jemez Springs, New Mexico, finished second in the average and clinched the team roping reserve championship title with Braiden Washburn, who competes for New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.
Bareback rider A.J. Kee from Farmington, Missouri, finished third in the average.
The Mesalands women’s team also had a strong showing, with nearly every competitor having a qualified run in each event. In the goat-tying event, Delaney Gonzales of Grants took sixth in the short round.
“For the first rodeo, our rodeo team performed pretty well,” Mesalands coach Matt Hughes said.“We do have a few things that we need to clean up, but with two weeks until the next rodeo, we have plenty of time to do that.”
Hughes said he had high hopes for the next competitions at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces on Sept. 27 and at Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona, on Sept. 28.
