Logan volleyball takes pair of tough losses

The Logan volleyball squad suffered two losses last week, but they weren’t to creampuff teams.

The Lady Longhorns (7-3) finished third in Vixen Classic tournament Saturday at Fort Sumner by defeating Santa Rosa 25-16, 25-17, 25-16. Logan was knocked out of title-game contention by losing to Class 1A defending state champion Melrose 21-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-25 in the semifinals.

Melrose (7-0) went on to win the Vixen Classic by defeating Mesilla Valley Christian 25-21, 25-15, 25-23 in the title match.

On Thursday, Logan lost on the road to perennial volleyball power Texico 18-25, 25-20, 23-25, 20-25.

At the Vixen Classic, Logan coach Robert Young said his squad started slowly against Melrose and committed nine service errors in one game alone.

“Melrose is too good to spot them nine points in a game,” he said. “We need to keep working on our serves. We work on it in practice, but we don’t look like it sometimes in games.”

Young said he was pleased with how the Lady Longhorns responded during the third-place game against Santa Rosa after the Melrose match.

“I was really proud of the way we bounced back after that letdown,” he said.

Despite the loss to Texico (3-2), Young said the Lady Longhorns responded well to a strong team in hostile territory.

“They don’t let the ball hit the floor and don’t make many mistakes,” Young said of Texico. “You have to be on your ‘A’ game to beat them.”

Grady/San Jon 3, Waldorf 0

Grady/San Jon rolled to a 25-20, 25-10, 25-14 road victory at Santa Fe Waldorf on Thursday.

Yara Sotelo led the Lady Bronchos (5-3) with 8 kills, while Morgan Becerra totaled 7. Leah Starbuck made 7 assists.

Waldorf fell to 3-5.
