The Tucumcari boys team ran tightly bunched but well back of the pack over the 3-mile course during the season-opening Clovis Invitational cross-country meet Friday at Ned Houk Park in Clovis.
The top Rattlers finisher was Josh Chavez, finishing 40th with a time of 21 minutes, 4 seconds.
Teammates behind him were Charles Prieto (41st, 21:12), Manny Hernandez (43rd, 21:24), Alexander Lujan (50th, 23:47), Dwight Brown (55th, 25:30) and Britt Lusk (56th, 25:33).
Patrick Coburn of Hobbs was the top boys finisher at the meet in a time of 16:24, just outpacing teammate Brendan Curtis (16:29).
Clovis' runners, which finished 3-4-5, won the boys team title with 30 points. Hobbs finished runner-up with 40, and Lovington was third with 77 points. Tucumcari finished eighth in the eight-team field with 225 points.
For the Tucumcari girls, which don’t have the required five members to field a team, the top finisher was Erin Encinias, who finished 26th in a time of 24:06.
Behind her for the Lady Rattlers were Aleaya Lucero (35th, 25:07), Ashley Shipley (41st, 27:21) and Melanie Jones (47th, 38:10).
The top girls finisher overall at the meet was Sabbatha Taylor of Hereford (Texas), finishing in 19:57.
In the team standings for the girls, Hereford won with 25 points with five finishers in the top nine. Hobbs finished runner-up with 66, and Odessa (Texas) was third with 68.
Results from Saturday's Mora Invitational at Mora weren't available at press start.
