Rattler softball off to 1-2 start

The Tucumcari Rattlers varsity softball team will play against the Lady Longhorns Thursday at Logan.

“I’m very excited about what these girls can do this season,” said Donnie Garcia, Lady Rattlers head coach.

The Lady Rattlers are off to a 1-2 start following their participation Friday and Saturday at the Santa Rosa tournament. Tucumcari beat Santa Rosa JV 25-3 on Friday and lost to Estancia (12-5) and Santa Rosa (7-6).

Garcia said in both losses, the Lady Rattlers played with dedication and did not lower their heads when they got behind.

“We had the lead going into the final inning against Santa Rosa (6-4),” Garcia said. “A few errors gave the Lady Lions an opening and they took advantage, scoring three runs for the win.”

Garcia said despite the early season losses the girls are in high spirits and committed to improving as the season progresses. He said 27 players have signed up for this season with a varsity roster of 16 and 11 on the junior varsity team.

“Several of the younger players have expressed interest in moving up to the varsity team,” Garcia said. “Since the first day of practice these girls have shown a lot of heart.”

Game time: 4 p.m. Thursday at Logan
