The event raised about $10K, drew more than 200 attendees.
More than 200 guests were mesmerized by the entertainment of hypnotist Dr. 'H' (Rick Honea) Saturday night at the annual Tucumcari/Quay County Chamber of Commerce banquet.
Mardi Gras was the theme the guests enjoyed at the Tucumcari Convention Center, complete with a cajun shrimp creole meal catered by Cornerstone's First Edition Pizza and Subs.
"I think the entire night was a complete success," said Gail Sanders, chamber director. "The decorations were spot on, the meal was delicious and the entertainment sealed the deal."
Honea enlisted local residents to participate in the hypnosis, 12 volunteered but only six were selected for the main portion of the show. The six volunteers were instructed by Honea to perform a variety of acts including a banjo picking contest, dance off and even speaking Japanese to convince a hard-of-hearing stuffed monkey to speak.
"I do not recall a lot of what happened; I do however remember being Britney Spears," said Angelina Arellano.
Honea said during hypnosis the volunteers would engage in physical activities but would actually feel rested after the event.
"I do not remember much of what happened but I do feel rested," said Jennifer McCasland.
McCasland said she did not recall competing in a banjo picking contest with Casey Mackey.
"I have no idea why I would pick up an inflatable guitar and hit the hypnotist," said Hannah Mericle.
At the end of the act Honea gave the volunteers a motivational message to remember.
"It's all about empowering people, the message was a positive foundation for them to build on," Honea said. "In a way it is a parting gift, for them being such good sports and participating."
Sanders said the banquet is one of the chamber's main fundraising events and this year the silent auction raised $3,500.
Combined with the ticket sales the event raised more than $10,000 to be used for the promotion of Tucumcari, Quay County.
