• A joint venture by the Tucumcari police, Quay County Sheriff’s deputies and New Mexico State police lead to the arrest of an escaped mental patient later identified as Gilbert Felix Romero of Denver. The escapee was sought out for assaulting two Tucumcari men, Ray Garcia and E.N. Roberson in separate incidents on the night of Aug. 7. Romero had escaped from a mental hospital in Pueblo, Colorado, and had been in the area for 17 months.

• Four graduates of Tucumcari High school left for U.S. Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio they are: Gerald W. Hayes, Arlie Bowen, Kenneth R. Yarbrough and Johnnie Garcia.

• Donna Kinkead of Tucumcari was named World’s Champion All - Around Cowgirl.

• Clifford S. Hearnesberger was honored for 20 years of service as a animal control agent of the U.S. Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife.
