Championship rings were given to team members for their state win.
A way to go out on top and a push to improve and set new records were what a few of the 3A track and field state champion Tucumcari Rattlers said Monday of receiving their state championship rings.
It was the best possible outcome, considering we thought we had tied for third, said Billy Sandoval, a 2017 graduate.
Sandoval said winning a state championship his senior year is exactly how he wanted to go out, "on a high note."
For junior Xavier Garcia and sophomore Seth Martinez said, a state championship feels amazing but each has new goals to aim for next year.
"I want to set the state record in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles," Martinez said.
Martinez, who won gold in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles, said his drive is to repeat the wins but set a new record.
Garcia said his goal of setting the state record in the javelin fell short.
"I threw for the record during my practice throw," Garcia said.
Garcia, who placed first in javelin, said the state record is in his sight, and he is determined to break it next season.
"I owe everything to my family and coaches who pushed me to do my best," Garcia said.
"These boys did an amazing job," said Eddie Encinias, assistant track coach.
Encinias said while it is a day to celebrate the students' achievements, the team and coaches also owe thanks to CJ Wiegel and Jeff Nunn for all of their support throughout the season.
