• Former Tucumcari student Thomas S. Wheeler received an Air Force Association Award from the 505 Air Force ROTC cadet program at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. Wheeler, the commander of the 505 cadet group, was chosen because of his superior officer potential and being in the top 10 percent of his graduating class.

• Helen Hutchens was presented a plaque for 15 years of faithful service as fair board member and 4-H leader. Hutchens received the plaque from Russell Harris, president of the Quay County Fair Association.

• Tucumcari City commissioners approved the building of a youth recreation center at the cost of $45,000. The commission had voted against the center earlier in the year but changed their minds about the center after hearing recommendations from the Parks and Recreation Commission during a special meeting.
