Railroad museum to open May 4

The Tucumcari Railroad Museum will open on May 4 with Mike Lucero serving as seasonal director, according to museum officials.

"We are delighted that Mike Lucero will be joining us,” said Frank Turner, museum board chairman.

Turner said Lucero has been a resident of Tucumcari for more than 50 years and has volunteered at the Mesaland's Dinosaur Museum, founded Arts Space and served as a state officer in the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves as chairman of the Board for the Tucumcari Historical Museum.

“In talking to Mike, one thing that becomes very apparent is his love for the city of Tucumcari," Turner said.

The Tucumcari Railroad Museum is housed in the former Rock Island/Southern Pacific passenger station, built in 1926. The museum tells the railroad history of Tucumcari by a display of artifacts, pictures and railroad memorabilia. The museum has several "hands-on" displays. The museum is located on the mainline of the Union Pacific Railroad.

The museum will be open from noon-5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, May through October.
