• Two fires destroyed two buildings in Tucumcari within two and a half hours. The first building claimed by the fire was Gamble’s Store. The school auditorium was the last building to be claimed by the fire and as a result, Trojan Junior High School was closed. The State Fire Marshall’s Office and Kenny Moore of the General Adjustment Bureau suspected arson in both fires.
• Members of the Tucumcari Fair Board held a groundbreaking ceremony for their new fairground facility.
• New Mexico State Police arrested a Texas man 11 miles east of San Jon for transporting 265 pounds of marijuana.
• Grover Payne was appointed as the new assistant hospital administrator at the Dan Trigg Hospital. He worked with hospital administrator Don Alexander on the proposed hospital budget and other hospital functions.
