Lawmen honored at NRA banquet

Six rifles were given away; more than 500 were in attendance.

Capping off a sold out annual banquet, the Quay County Friends of the National Rifle Association gave away six Henry .22 caliber rifles to random attendees.

"The Quay County Friends of the NRA want to thank everyone who attended and helped make this event a success," said Tim Clark, vice chair.

More than 500 people attended the annual banquet on Saturday at the Tucumcari Convention Center.

Clark said the six rifles were given to the six members of the Mountain Road RV Park owned by Franklin McCasland.

The banquet featured several raffles for firearms, knives and accessories that attendees could participate in through the purchase of tickets.

All of the money raised during the banquet is used to fund Quay County youth shooting sports, hunter safety programs, women's introduction to firearms classes and improvements at area gun clubs/shooting ranges, said Justin Knight, QCNRA member.

Clark said last year's banquet was the highest attended and most grossing banquet in the state of New Mexico. As a result, the organization received a grant from the national NRA for $124,179. Those funds have already been used to help to pay for the 4-H youth shooting sports, specialized gun training courses planned for this summer and improvements at the gun range at the Logan Gun Club, Clark added.

During the banquet, Village of Logan Chief of Police Bob Gore and Quay County Sheriff's Deputy Dennis Smart were honored for their service in law enforcement.

"We wanted to honor these two for their dedication and service to our residents," Clark said.
