The National Honor Society of San Jon schools made a donation of $200 to a local animal rescue group as part of an initiative to aide local organizations.
"We all love animals and wanted to donate the money to a cause that makes a difference," said Alexis Quintana, NHS president.
Quintana and other honor society members presented the board of the Quay County Paws and Claws Animal Rescue Group with a check on Friday during the Quay schools Federal Credit Union's banquet.
"Donations like these help to keep our organization going," said Kathi McClelland, Paws and Claws chair.
McClelland said the donation will be used to pay for beds for the shelter or vet bills. She said donations like the one made by San Jon's NHS is one of the organization primary sources of revenue.
"Without the support of local organizations, residents and agencies, we would not be able to offer the services that we do," McClelland said.
This is the second service project that the San Jon NHS has conducted this year, according to Peggy Gates, the society's sponsor.
Gates said the NHS members were paid to help serve the members and guests at a banquet held at the Tucumcari Convention Center, and rather than keep the money, they donated it to the rescue group.
