Serving the High Plains
Three seventh graders at Tucumcari Middle School won prizes for essays in a contest sponsored by Delfido Gonzalez Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2528.
Two of the winners, Heaven Hendrea, third place, and Josh Walker, second place, read their essays at the VFW Post's Memorial Day luncheon. Post Commander Fred Porter read the essay of the first prize winner, Melina Encinias, to Post members.
Heaven Hendrea's essay read in part, "We need to learn more about Mount Rushmore and why it was started" in her essay about what she would tell the Founding Fathers.
Josh Walker's essay concluded that we should be a nation in which "each individual counted equally, one in which money didn't decide."
In her winning essay, Melina Encinias addressed the "bravery" of the Founding Fathers. She said she would offer them gratitude for the country their principles have built.
