Longhorns, Lady Longhorns advance

Boys

The 8 seed (18-10) Logan Longhorns will face the No. 1 seed (26-1) Cliff Cowboys Wednesday in Albuquerque.

"We just need to continue to do the little things which ultimately win games," said Rafael Roybal, Longhorns head coach

The Longhorns advanced to the second round of 1A state basketball tournament by beating the 9 seed Springer Red Devils 72-51 Saturday at Logan.

Roybal said the team showed discipline on the court by not committing needless fouls and limiting the number of free throws for the Red Devils who were 5-10 for the night.

"They are playing sound fundamental basketball," Roybal said.

The Cowboys advanced to the next round following a 70-28 routing of 16 seed (14-13) Pine Hill Warriors on Saturday.

"We need to play harder on defense," said Hayes Frost, a senior.

Frost said the team knows the Cowboys will be ready to play and they will have to work together for the win. He said rebounds and second chance shots will be a factor during game. The post will need to block out control the glass and put up the second shot, Frost said.

"I have all the faith in these guys," Frost said. "Hopefully they have the same faith in me."

Game time is 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Girls

The 6 seed (21-8) Logan Lady Longhorns advanced to the quarterfinals after a first round 73-42 win over the 11 seed (17-9) McCurdy Lady Bobcats on Friday.

The Bobcats were able to control the backboard in the first half of the game keeping them close with the Lady Longhorns.

Fouls became an issue for the Lady Bobcats, who sent the Lady Longhorns to the free throw line 34 times during the game.

Lady Bobcats head coach Flavio Martinez said they do not have a deep bench, and two of his stronger players had three fouls by the half. He said he addressed the fouling issue during half time, which had an adverse effect on the games outcome.

During the second half the Lady Longhorns controlled the rebounds as the Lady Bobcats were not playing as aggressive on the inside.

"Looking back I should have been more mindful on how I talked to the girls about the fouls," Martinez said trying to cut down on the fouls the girls pulled back on their aggressive play underneath the basket.

With the win the Lady Longhorns play the 3 seed (21-5) Magdalena Lady Steers Tuesday at Albuquerque.

"We are going to bring our track shoes and be ready to play a fast paced game," said Clair Rachor, Lady Longhorns head coach.

Rachor said the team is not overlooking anyone in the tournament and will be ready to play 32 minutes of basketball.

"We are going to work on boxing out and on our offense rotation," said Marissa Miller, senior.
