Following the initiative of the late commissioner Daniel Lopez to get the community involved, the Tucumcari City Commission has opened the District 3 commission seat to applications and nominations from residents.
"We know this is something that Daniel would have wanted," said Robert Lumpkin, city commissioner.
The District 3 commission seat was vacant during Thursday night's regular meeting of the city commission. District 3 commissioner Lopez died on Dec. 29.
The commissioners expressed their sorrow for the loss of Lopez.
"He was more than a fellow commissioner, he was my buddy," said Jimmy Sandoval, commissioner.
Lumpkin said the city will accept applications from until Jan. 24, then the commission will review the applications. He said from those reviews interviews will be set up then a selection will be made.
Lumpkin said according to the city statues the commission has the authority to appoint someone to the vacated commissioners seat. He said after much discussion during a workshop held before Thursday's meeting at City Hall the commissioners agreed they should get the community involved in this process.
"Daniel always advocated the importance of involving the community with what the commission does," Lumpkin said. "He always wanted the commission to be accountable to the residents it represented and listen to what the people had to say."
"What we are requiring is a letter of interest along with their affidavit of voter registration which they can get from the Quay County Clerks Office," said Angelica Gray, city clerk.
Persons interested in apply or nominating someone for the position should go to City Hall located at 215 East Center Street.
