Tucumcari city commission is considering holding town hall meetings to encourage more community involvement.
Commissioner Daniel Lopez expressed his concerns Thursday. Lopez said the commission should consider holding town hall meetings.
The commission approved a Lodgers Tax Board request for $35,000 to fund the Tucumcari Today and Tonight advertising campaigns.
The money will be used for promoting daytime activities and new flags for the light poles in an attempt at getting more people to stop in Tucumcari, said Skylar Kaye, and lodgers board member.
Kaye said as the funds become available, neon lights along Route 66 will be restored back to working order.
In other business commissioners:
- Received $480,000 in grant money for improvement of streets in the Daubs addition project.
- Adopted a proclamation declaring Oct. 7 - Oct. 13 as National 4-H week. The proclamation was signed by Mayor Amiel Curnutt and presented to 4-H members Bethany Bishop and Reagan and Jordan Runyan.
- Adopted a proclamation declaring Oct. 22 - Oct. 31 as Red Ribbon Week. It was signed by Curnutt and received by Susan Leece. Leece told commissioners the Red Ribbon carnival will be held 6 p.m. to 9 ;.m. on Oct. 27 with admission being $1 or one can of food.
- Lopez said he had been hearing a lot of complaints about the city water bills. Landlords are having to pay renters bills after they have moved out and Lopez said that other utility companies do not do this, it is up to the renter to make sure the bill is paid.
- Curnutt said it was time again for the city to have a free dump day for the community to get their property clean before winter months.
