Bond would bring funding for library acquisitions

If passed, the 2012 GO Bond B question on the Nov. 6 ballot would spread $9.8 million across the state for equipment and supplemental library resource acquisitions, including print, non-print and electronic resources.

For the property owners there will be a tax increase based upon the size of the projects and amount of money awarded to communities, said Tim Lyman, Curry County assessor.

Lyman said the amount of increase is still not known and the Public Education Department will generate the tax rate to repay the Go Bonds. Lyman said the education department hasn't released that information to the assessors office.

The bond will provide $3 million to non-triabal public libraries; those in Roosevelt, Curry, Quay and DeBaca County will receive a portion of this fund.

The Tucumcari Public Library will use the $15,909.39 to increase its book budget, update equipment and add new literacy projects, said Dainetta Kroeker, library director.

The Clovis Carver Public Library will receive $67,485.49, which can be used for book purchases, computer workstation upgrades, and supplies and materials bought for the public, said Melody Cone, administrative assistant.

Cone said the money will be used to directly benefit the public and none is ever used for staff salaries or equipment purchased exclusively for staff use.

In Roosevelt County, the Portales Public Library will receive, $30,076.89, which will be used to increase the audio book collection, children's resources, additional computer station or upgrades to existing stations and supplies, said Denise Burnett, library director

Fort Sumner Public Library will receive $6,706.09. Karla Hunt, library director, was not immediately available for comment.

Bond B will also allocate money to the higher education departments: $3 million for library resource acquisitions, including books, equipment, resources and collaborative library resources and information technology projects for academic libraries.

The public education departments will also receive $3 million for library resource acquisitions, including library books, for public school libraries.

A complete list of allocations for colleges or public school libraries was not available.
