Rattlers look to contain Cardinals

The (5-0) Tucumcari Rattlers are preparing to play the toughest team they have faced to this point, said Wayne Ferguson, head coach.

Ferguson said you have to look past the 2-3 record when it comes to the Eunice Cardinals. He said the schedule included games against Tulurosa, Texico and Lovington.

Ferguson said the Cardinals have good size and speed, a combination that their defense will have work to contain.

The Rattlers offensive charge has slowed since the start of the season. In their first three games, they earned more than 250 yards of offense and scored 30 or more points.

Though in their Sept. 21 match up with the Dexter Demons, the Rattlers were held to seven points and tallied six turnovers. They had four turnovers the following week against the Fort Sumner Foxes, a game which they did not earn 250 yards of total offense.

Ferguson said the team is aware of the need to limit turnovers as the season progresses. He said the team has responded well when an error is made. He said instead of hanging their heads and getting out of the game, they are focused and looking to make a play.

Eunice's coach could not be reached immediately for comment.

The (2-3) Logan Longhorns are aware of the danger associated with a (0-5) Springer team, said Kenny Terry, head coach.

Terry said the Devils will be hungry and looking for that first win of the season which makes them a dangerous opponent.

The Longhorns are still reeling from two tough road losses, first to the No. 1 ranked Tatum Coyotes and then to the No. 2 rank Carrizozo Grizzlies.

"We are just going to have to get out there and get them before they get us," Terry said.

Terry said they have seen some film on the Devils and know they are a young team that will be ready to play come Friday.

Springer's coach was not immediately available for comment.

Looking for bounce back from a 85-32 loss to the (5-0) Dora Coyotes, the (3-1) San Jon Coyotes will host the (2-2) Clovis Christian Eagles.

We are going to have to contain their speed on defense, said Bobby Gomez, Coyotes head coach.

Gomez said they are hoping to spread the Eagles defense to open lanes for their running attack and passing.

The guys know they have to shut down Jacob Benally and his receivers to have a chance to win on Friday, said Corey Robinson, Eagles head coach.

Robinson said the team is going to focus on being disciplined on the field and playing good football. He said it is going to be a tough task to shut down the Coyotes offense.
