Another strong ground game powered the Tucumcari Rattlers to a 35-7 win over New Mexico Military Institute on Friday night in Roswell.
Tucumcari moves to 2-0 with win.
"We jumped out quick, but we still have a lot of growing to do," Rattlers coach Wayne Ferguson said.
There were five Rattlers rotating in the backfield against the (0-2) Colts. Combined they carried the ball 33 times for 277 yards and four touchdowns.
Senior Jeffery Cordova rushed for two of those touchdowns (44 yards and 1 yard), senior Zach Hurd rushed in from 15 yards out and senior Dillon Wood had a 82-yard touchdown. (Hurd also rushed for a two point conversion and kicked for three PAT's)
Ferguson said overall, the win over the Colts was a good team effort. He said a bad snap on a punt led to the Colts only score of the game, a 10- yard rush by senior Chris Scharfin.
Ferguson said the team gave a great defensive effort, although there were some missed assignments and the Colts exploited them. He said the defense continued to play tough and made the adjustments needed.
Last week, the Rattlers rushed 34 times for 275 yards with three touchdowns in a 35-13 win over the Raton Tigers.
