Two hurt in head-on crash

A New Mexico State Police officer was treated for minor injuries after his state police unit was struck head-on Monday night by an erratic driver from Clovis on U.S. Highway 54 near Logan, said Capt. Jimmy Glascock.

Glascock said officer Joshua Campos and Severino Chavez, 19, of Clovis, were taken to Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital. He said Campos was released a few hours later with minor injuries. Chavez sustained serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, Glascock said.

Officer Joshua Campos' patrol unit was struck head-on while he was responding to a report of an erratic driver traveling on U.S. Highway 54 near Tucumcari.

Glascock said at 11:16 p.m., police received a call from a motorist near Logan, reporting a white sport utility vehicle had pulled out in front of her with no lights on.

Glascock said the officer was eastbound on U.S. 54 from Tucumcari while trying to locate the vehicle. He said Campos told other officers that near mile marker 313, about 7 miles northeast of Tucumcari, he saw a westbound vehicle cross the center line and into the eastbound lane.

Glascock said the Jeep, driven by Chavez, crashed into Campos' unit head-on. The crash is under investigation.

Campos has been a state police officer about a year-and-a-half, Glascock said.
