New Mexico State police officer treated for injuries following crash on U.S. Highway 54

A New Mexico State Police officer was treated for minor injuries after his state police unit was struck head-on Monday night by an erratic driver from Clovis on U.S. Highway 54 near Logan, said Capt. Jimmy Glascock.

Glascock said officer Joshua Campos and Severino Chavez, 19, of Clovis, were taken to Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital. He said Campos was released from the hospital a few hours later with minor injuries. Chavez sustained serious, but less-than-life-threatening injuries, according to Glascock.

Glascock said at 11:16 p.m., police received a call from a motorist near Logan, reporting a white sport utility vehicle had pulled out in front of her with no lights on. He said the caller advised the vehicle was westbound on U.S. 54.

Glascock said officer Campos was eastbound on U.S. 54 from Tucumcari while trying to locate the vehicle. He said officer Campos told officers that near mile marker 313, about seven miles northeast of Tucumcari, he saw a westbound vehicle cross the center line and into the eastbound lane.

Glascock said the Jeep, driven by Chavez, crashed into Campos' unit head-on. The crash remains under investigation.

Campos has been a state police officer about a year and a half, according to Glascock.
