Coaches altering practices

A lack of effectiveness and health concerns have area coaches changing their strategies when it comes to two-a-day football practices.

"There is a concern for the children when it comes to the high temperatures we have been seeing," said Bobby Gomez, San Jon's six-man football coach.

Gomez said another reason they are holding only one practice a day from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. is the Coyotes are incorporated with the Grady-House athletic program and their students can't make it to practice until 4 p.m.

"The old days, when teams would work out for two hours in morning and two hours in the evening don't work for me as a coach," said Tucumcari coach Wayne Ferguson.

Ferguson said he does not believe in the effectiveness of two-a-day practices. He said the Rattlers are working out from 6:30 a.m., to 9 a.m., on field and putting in extra weight room time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

We will have more coverage of the football, volleyball and cross country practices and be sure to keep an eye out for our upcoming Pigskin preview.
